Warm greetings to all members of the Academy of Clinical Microbiologists (ACM)!!
One remarkable event that occurred in the last six months was the continuing medical education (CME) programme on 'Clinical Microbiology: Diagnostic Approach to Infectious Disease Syndromes' at Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, on 29 January 2020. It was a well-organised programme by Dr Kavita Raja, Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology (SCTIMST). The one-day programme was planned with six plenary sessions. Following each plenary session, there were paper presentations in the form of case discussions, outbreak management and research works pertaining to the session topic. This was very much appreciated by the audience. The first session was on 'Pyogenic Meningitis: Recent trends in Diagnostic tests and Management' by Dr Sujatha Sistia, Professor in Microbiology, JIPMER, Puducherry. The second session was on 'Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Challenges in Diagnosis and Interpretation' by Dr Ranganathan N Iyer, Senior Consultant, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Global Hospital, Hyderabad. Plenary session three was conducted by Dr Anitha P.M., Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology, Government Medical College, Manjeri, on 'Enteric Parasitic Infections – Diagnostic Challenges', which was very informative. The next plenary session was by Dr Swapna Bijulal, Additional Professor and Head of Microbiology Department, Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Thiruvananthapuram, based on 'Infections in Neutropenic Cancer Patients – Challenges in Diagnosis and Management'. The next session was taken by Dr Kavita Raja, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, SCTIMST, on 'Diagnostic Dilemmas in Blood stream infections'. The final session was an interesting talk by Dr Arvind R, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Infectious Diseases, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. The talk was on 'Pyrexia of Unknown Origin (PUO)-A Comprehensive Diagnostic Approach'. Each session was followed by presentations that included case reports, brief description of outbreaks and studies pertaining to the topic and moderated by the corresponding speaker. This gave an opportunity to the junior microbiologists and residents to interact with and get the inputs from the senior experienced guest speakers.
Posters were displayed by junior faculties and postgraduate students from various institutions from within and outside Kerala. The academic council meeting of ACM was held during the lunch time.
Readers may please visit our website www.clinicalmicrobio.org for PowerPoint of the guest speakers' talks and photographs of the event.
The eighth Triennial Conference of ACM, to be held at St. John's Medical College, Bengaluru, organised by Dr S. Muralidharan and team, is postponed due to the present COVID pandemic. The date of CME and registration details will be announced later.
