Warm greetings from Thrissur!
Working at a steady pace, ACM has made tremendous contributions in taking microbiology out of the laboratories to the patient's bedside in the hospital as well as in the community and developing it into a clinical speciality. It has been successful in instilling the concepts and practice of clinical microbiology in both older and newer generation of microbiologists.
The most important event that occurred in the last six months was the CME conducted at Believers Church Medical College, Thiruvalla, on February 25th 2017. The theme of the CME was ‘Emerging infections in Clinical Practice - Challenges and management’. The CME helped immensely to increase the awareness about the management of emerging infections by bringing together clinical microbiologists and infectious disease experts through some highly interactive sessions. Following the inauguration ceremony, the first speaker, Dr. Anup R Warrier, infectious disease consultant, Aster Medicity, Kochi, enlightened us with the emerging challenges in the diagnosis and management of ‘Acute encephalitis’. This was followed by a very informative talk on ‘Acute febrile illness and Rickettsial infections’ by Dr. John Antony Jude Prakash, professor of Clinical Microbiology, CMC, Vellore. The last talk in the pre-lunch session was on ‘Dangerous safety pins’ by Dr. Aneesh Basheer, associate professor of Internal Medicine, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Puducherry, who highlighted the different manifestations of infection by the treacherous non-fermenter, Burkholderia pseudomallei. This was followed by a poster session. In the post-lunch session, Dr. Kavita Raja gave a very interesting talk on the ‘Uncommon bacterial Infections’ in which she discussed on how to correlate rare isolates with their clinical manifestations and to interpret, presenting data from her own institution. This was followed by a free paper session and valedictory function. The CME was indeed a great success in both the academic aspect and audience participation. Congratulations to the organising team headed by Dr. Renu Mathew, professor and HOD of Microbiology, BCMC, Thiruvalla.
The directory of ACM has been updated and was released by Dr. Prithi Nair, president of ACM by giving a copy to Dr. Kavita Raja, founder secretary and the chief editor of JACM at the CME at BCMC, Thiruvalla.
An ACM council meeting was also conducted on the same day. The agenda discussed included preparations for TRICON 2017, 6th ACM oration, forthcoming general body election and strategies to increase the ACM membership.
The most important upcoming event pertaining to ACM is the 7th Triennial conference, TRICON 2017, to be conducted at Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode, on August 4th, 5th and 6th 2017. The theme of the conference is ‘Current concepts and diagnostic challenges in clinical microbiology’. We can definitely say that a 3-day academic feast is awaiting us. On August 4th 2017, there will be workshops on diagnostic aspects of mycology, molecular diagnosis of tuberculosis and antimicrobial sensitivity testing and interpretation. The CME on the second day will be packed with guest lectures by eminent speakers from various specialities. The conference on August 6th 2017 will have the ACM oration, followed by the free and best paper presentations by research workers all over India. There will be also poster presentation and quiz on the same day.
